Oil was first found in Pennsylvania in 1859. The burning surface flows of oil was worshipped by man from the lost civilizations of the western hemisphere to ancient China. The man, Drake is the first man to find oil by drilling method which is used throughout the world.

Rotary method of drilling is employed and more pipes are added as the cutting bit goes deeper. When the pipe reached the source bed, another drilling start in the range of one in 4.406 to 32.375 hectares or 40.468 to 364.22 hectares for natural gas. Offshore drilling became popular during the postwar period compared to land drilling. Oil is transported by tankers, pipelines, barges and hauliers.

Before the development of the internal combustion engine, oil is used for lamp, paving and lubrication. Today, oil major users are vehicles and planes.

More than 10,000,000 square meters of the sedimentary rocks may contain oil.

When the world oil reserves stood at about 200,000 millions of barrels in 1957, more than 6,000 millions of barrels were produced and used.
