Old boy Gan pledges to help school with RM1.2m arrears

St. Francis Institution is required to pay an annual quit rent of RM12,000 to the State Land and Mines Office as stipulated in the National Land Code 1965. Located within the Unesco World Heritage site, the school's quit rent arrears reached RM1.2 million.

A former pupil, Datuk Gan Tian Loo has worked hard to resolve the matter with the support of the Chief Minister.

St. Francis Instituition was founded in 1872 by Rev Fr Maximilsian de Souza and in 1902, Rev Bro Maurice Josephus from Manhattan College, New York was named its director when La Salle Brothers took over.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam assisted and the Malacca government waives the RM1.2mil quit rent arrears.

Pay Fong Middle School, SJK (C) Pay Fong One, SJK (C) Pay Teck, SJK (C) Ek Te in Tanjung Kling, SJK (C) Yu Sin in Kuala Linggi and SMK Canossa Convent are also facing huge arrears in quit rents and these too had been amicably solved.

The two caring leaders believed that education is important and with their efforts in waiving the schools' quit rent arrears, many pupils are able to enjoy continuous facilities in these schools.
