Venice: City of Canals
Venice spreads out over 118 islests and among the islands run almost 200 canals crossed by some 400 bridges.
Thus, Venice appears unusually quiet to the visitor, long used to the hum of automobile traffic.
Venice has preserved its past remarkably well. The first bridge across the Grand Canal was a pontoon type and it was supported by boats. San Zaccaria is on of the earliest stone bridges to be built and it was ready some time before 1170. Venice established a Latin empire in Constantinople 1204 61. When Nicolo Polo and his brother Maffeo, jewelers, returned from their first exploration in China, the empire of Kublai Khan had reached from the steppes of Siberia to the Punjab of India.
